Ivan Ivanov-Vano

There’s something very magical and unique about Russian animation in general, and the work of Ivan Ivanov-Vano in particular. Inspired by classical opera, and utilizing two dimensional stop-motion animation, he created some incredibly stirring short films. He was also a big influence on (and mentor of) Yuri Norstein, another of my favorites.

Sean Christensen (Awesome But True) has created one of my favorite mini-comics this year: the truly awesome Miranda Baby. It takes a simple premise (two ladies conversing on the phone, one of which we never actually see), and wrings as much humor, craziness, and genuine feeling it can from the situation. With synthesizers.

Sweden owes us all a huge apology for keeping Rui Tenreiro’s work a secret for so long. Somebody needs to get his comics translated and published into English post-haste. Plenty of material on flickr, and at his independent publishing imprint, Soyfriends.
